Another railroad crossing to get safety improvements

Gates and arms will be installed at the Seventh Street railroad crossing following City Council action slated to take place Monday.

City Transportation Planner Jill Wanderscheid said Friday she will ask the council to approve an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co. to install the equipment on BNSF’s crossing. The double railroad tracks are west of Lewis Boulevard at Seventh Street near McDonald’s. No safety equipment is in place there now.

It’s time to invest fully in high-speed rail

SFGate

Every industrialized, competitive country in the world, except the United States, has high-speed rail. Those 30-plus lines with 30 more planned were built by governments creating jobs, increasing mobility and fighting climate change. China, in less than 10 years, boasts more than 5,000 miles of 225 mph electrically powered trains, investing some $88 billion last year alone. Even Brazil, Morocco and Vietnam have begun systems.

Can’t the richest nation in the world afford high-speed rail?

All aboard! Amtrak sees surge in ridership

MSNBC

With gas prices hovering around $4 a gallon and this summer shaping up to be the most expensive ever for air travel, some vacationers may be turning to another method of transportation: train travel.

Amtrak has seen 18 consecutive months of ridership growth and is on track to set a new annual record. The passenger rail company reported 2.7 million passengers last month, a 9.9 percent increase over April 2010.

“Gas prices are probably one of the main reasons why traintravel continues to go up,” said Amtrak spokesman Clifford Cole. “That plus the fact that people just like the hassle-free way of traveling by train.”

High-speed trains: A top Obama Administration priority, says US Transport Secretary LaHood

eTN

In his remarks at the ongoing World Travel & Tourism Council’s eleventh Global Travel and Tourism Summit, currently being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, the United States transport secretary, Ray LaHood, has said the Obama administration has big plans to establish high-speed trains.

These goals, according to the US transport secretary, goes in line with what he termed as “historic investments in America’s roads, bridges, streetcar and light-rail systems.” US Transport Secretary LaHood said: “President Obama has set the goal of connecting 80 percent of Americans with high-speed rail within a quartet century – and we’re well on our way. That means every traveler will be able to get from Southern California to Las Vegas, or from Boston to Washington, or from Detroit to Chicago to St. Louis, in a fraction of the time it takes to drive.”

US official touts high-speed rail at tourism meet

AFP

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Wednesday touted high-speed rail as key to meeting future US transport needs that will also give America greater tourist appeal.

“This is what Americans want — high-speed rail built by Americans for Americans,” he told a gathering of travel and tourism industry leaders.

The administration of President Barack Obama has budgeted $10 billion for investments in high-speed rail systems to connect major urban centers with a goal of serving 80 percent of the population in 25 years.

Florida’s $2 Billion for High Speed Rail Goes Elsewhere

The Tampa to Orlando line had the backing of everyone from business to the state’s Republican legislators; but Rick Scott, the new Tea Party-backed governor, blocked it as a “big government boondoggle”. Today the Transportation Department announced that the money will go elsewhere.

Scott had claimed that even though the Federal Government was fully funding the project to the tune of $2 billion dollars, the state couldn’t afford what he called “huge operating costs” – this despite the fact that investor groups had guaranteed to cover any overruns or deficits.

What became clear was that this wasn’t about economics, but about ideology – just as in New Jersey and Wisconsin, where Republican governors blocked equally necessary rail programs out of opposition to “big government”.

Florida’s Tampa to Orlando line would have been the first high-speed rail line to be put into operation, and the run from the Orlando airport to the Disney resorts would have guaranteed passengers… but having a successful showpiece was the last thing the anti-rail ideologues wanted. So that’s that.

The Future of the US Rail System

TriplePundit.com

One of the first forms of transportation that served the masses of people traveling throughout the United States was the railroad system.  Presently this country uses many means of transportation that are innovative but create high carbon emissions such as airplanes.  Though trains in the United States are an experience of their own and create less CO2, rail travel in the U.S. lacks advancement in technology and efficiency compared to other rail systems in the world.  As fuel prices steadily increase we need to rely less on airplanes and automobiles and focus our attention on improving our train systems for mass transportation.

As Amtrak Turns 40, “America’s Railroad” Continues to “Go Green”

On May 1, 2011, Amtrak celebrates 40 years of service with national events through National Train Day and a further commitment to

Amtrak will celebrate 40 years as “America’s Railroad” on Sunday, May 1, 2011. That celebration will last a week and culminate with National Train Day on Saturday, May 7th.

The 40-year anniversary also marks the end of a year-long trial run of an Amtrak green transportation experiment that uses biodiesel in their passenger line that runs between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth, a program TIME magazine listed as one of “The 50 Best Inventions of 2010.”

That program is part of Amtrak’s continued commitment to offering a “green transportation” choice. Since 2003, the rail service has cut its diesel fuel use by more than 5% while increasing train service on many routes, according to Amtrak. For 2011 and 2012, Amtrak is shooting for a 7% cut.
