The depot, along with other downtown development efforts, can be a catalyst for downtown and economic development in the Kewanee area, they said.

Some of those taking to train to or from St. Louis this week are in for a treat – riding in a dome car that affords better views as the train rolls through the countryside.
What Amtrak calls its “Great Dome” car is being used on the Missouri River Runner, which runs four times daily across the state – twice each way – connecting Kansas City and St. Louis, with stops in Independence, Lee’s Summit and six other cities. Seating is first come, first served.

The future of Amtrak and the possible expansion of the Chicago to Quad Cities line announced in 2010 is apparently still on track.
In the fall of 2010, a $230 million federal grant was awarded to Illinois and Iowa to establish a new Amtrak service between Chicago and Iowa City. The trains will run on a route beginning at Chicago’s Union Station and traveling on the BNSF Railway’s line to Wyanet, and then on the Iowa Interstate Railroad’s line from Wyanet to Iowa City.

Figures released by the Illinois Department of Transportation show state-supported Amtrak routes are continuing to see a boom in popularity. State Rep. Don Moffitt said regional cooperation between cities on the Chicago-to-Quincy corridor, including Galesburg, is needed to reach the growing potential passenger rail service offers.

Starting April 16, Norfolk Southern Railway is scheduled to begin trackwork in Michigan that will result in the restoration of normal travel times on Amtrak’s Wolverine and Blue Water routes by May, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) andAmtrak officials recently announced.
