Amtrak customers throughout the Midwest are enjoying train rides of more than 100 miles per hour. The same might be true for St. Louis residents in just a few years. Right now, only customers in Indiana and parts of Michigan are enjoying those high speed trips and shorter commutes. Chicago was recently added to the list of stops.

They called it a historical event. State and Federal transportation officials piled off an Amtrak car at the Kalamazoo train station Wednesday, proclaiming it a day to remember. Wolverine 350 was the first train to have made the run from Porter, Indiana to Kalamazoo Michigan at 110 MPH.

Faster Amtrak train service between Detroit and Chicago got a big boost with federal approval for passenger rail to travel at up to 110 m.p.h. on part of the route, officials said today.
Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation announced this afternoon that the Federal Railroad Administration has signed off on boosting speeds on 80 miles of track in southwest Michigan and Indiana to 110 m.p.h., part of a larger effort to shave travel time between the two of the Midwest’s biggest cities and ultimately eliminate bottlenecks with freight rail in the Chicago area.

A new high-speed train connecting St. Louis and Chicago will provide students with an alternative way to travel.
The railroad, which is currently under construction, should be complete sometime in 2014, according to officials involved in the project.

On Dec. 27, engineer James Shoemaker nudged the throttle of his state-owned, 3,000-horsepower locomotive, City of Asheville, to 79 mph on tracks owned and improved by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Behind Shoemaker were 286 passengers on the midday Piedmont run that was added in 2010 by NCDOT.
