A new transit hub in downtown Des Moines could help Iowa bring high speed rails to the state.
DART will break ground later this year on the 21 million dollar hub.
Officials think the new site will not only help the 16 thousand bus riders in the metro
but it could end up sitting next to a new train station if Iowa wins a bid for a high speed rail that could eventually stretch from Chicago to Des Moines.
“We are going to be a central part of what will be a transportation campus in downtown Des Moines,” said DART spokesman Gunnar Olson.
Iowa was denied a bid for the high speed rail earlier this year but will know if their second bid is accepted by the end of the month.
The first phase would run from Chicago to Iowa City.
